These lady beetles are native to Asia, but were imported into the United States back in 1916 as a way to control certain insect pests. They control aphids, scale and other soft-bodied arthropods. However, it is their large numbers that lead to their nuisance. The lady beetle must find shelter in homes or in buildings over the winter. If these beetles are squeezed or squashed, they ‘reflex bleed’ and release a yellow liquid from their leg joints and an unpleasant odor.
